Airbus has announced plans to expand its workforce in India to over 5,000 employees, aiming to strengthen its presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation markets. The European aerospace giant made the announcement on October 25, 2024, coinciding with the inauguration of its new India and South Asia Headquarters and Training Center in Delhi. The facility, located at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), will serve as a hub for Airbus’ commercial aircraft, helicopters, and defense divisions across the region.

The new Delhi headquarters features four A320neo Full Flight Simulators (FFS), reflecting Airbus’ commitment to pilot training and operational support for its commercial aircraft fleet in India. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Airbus India President and South Asia Managing Director Remi Maillard highlighted the company’s long-term investment in the country. “The inauguration of the new headquarters of Airbus in India and South Asia is another milestone in Airbus’ ambitious vision for India,” Maillard stated. “It represents our unwavering commitment to developing the full spectrum of the country’s aerospace ecosystem. Airbus has seen a three-fold growth in its full-time employee count in India in the last three years, and we will continue to grow.”

Currently, Airbus employs around 3,500 people in India, and this number is set to increase with the opening of a 5,000-seater Airbus Campus in Bengaluru next year. Beyond workforce expansion, Airbus plans to source $2 billion in services and components from India over the next two years, reinforcing the country’s role as a critical player in Airbus’ global supply chain.

The expansion also includes new manufacturing initiatives, with Airbus set to produce the C295 military transport aircraft and H125 helicopters domestically in India. These projects not only support Airbus’ growth in India but also align with the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative, fostering local manufacturing and creating high-skilled jobs.

India’s aviation market has seen significant growth, driven by rising travel demand and large-scale aircraft orders from leading Indian carriers such as Air India and IndiGo. These airlines have placed substantial orders for new aircraft to meet the surging domestic and international travel demand. Airbus’ strengthened presence and investment in India underscore its commitment to supporting this booming market and its infrastructure needs.

Airbus’ focus on expanding in India is a response to the country’s growing aviation sector, which has attracted considerable investment as airlines expand their fleets to cater to increasing passenger volumes. By boosting its workforce and facilities in India, Airbus aims to provide comprehensive support for local carriers, while the addition of in-country manufacturing bolsters India’s capabilities as an aviation manufacturing hub.

The new India and South Asia headquarters in Delhi marks a strategic move for Airbus as it continues to align with India’s aviation growth trajectory. With the forthcoming Bengaluru campus and new manufacturing projects, Airbus is positioning itself to play a pivotal role in India’s aerospace future, fostering industry growth and creating jobs in a thriving aviation market.
