AirExplore Gains US Approval for New Flights

AirExplore, the European-based wet-lease specialist, has received regulatory approval from the US Department of Transportation (DoT) to operate commercial flights to, from, and within the United States. This milestone marks a significant expansion for the Slovakia-registered carrier, which is owned by Avia Solutions Group (ASG), the world’s largest ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance) provider.

The Foreign Air Carrier Permit (FACP) allows AirExplore to run scheduled and charter flights carrying passengers, mail, and cargo between US airports using wet-leased aircraft operated by FAA Part 129 certified operators. These aircraft must also meet standards set by the FAA’s International Aviation Safety Assessment (IASA) Program.

The FACP was granted following AirExplore’s reapplication for the Part 129 license, a process necessitated by its acquisition by ASG in 2023. Once Slovakia obtains its IASA certification, AirExplore will be fully authorized to operate as an air carrier under this permit, following the processing of FAA Part 129 Operations Specification for the airline.

Martin Stulajter, CEO of AirExplore, expressed enthusiasm about the approval, stating, “This is a fantastic moment for AirExplore as the airline grows its international presence. This approval reflects the benefits of being backed by the Avia Solutions Group.”

AirExplore’s entry into the US market aligns with ASG’s strategy to bolster its global footprint and provide flexible aviation solutions to meet industry demands. Founded in 2010, AirExplore has swiftly become Slovakia’s largest ACMI carrier and was acquired by ASG in June 2023.

ASG’s CEO, Jonas Janukenas, highlighted the advantages of operating from Slovakia, noting, “Slovakia offers a dynamic business environment and having an AOC here presents significant opportunities for extended geographic reach and new routes.” He also emphasized the added value of being part of ASG, stating, “Joining the leading aviation services group provides valuable industry know-how and new business opportunities, positioning us well for growth.”

AirExplore currently operates a fleet of 17 Boeing 737-800 aircraft, including three freighters. Of these, nine are dedicated to passenger services and eight are used for cargo operations. The airline’s aircraft are utilized by various partners, including Jet2, Pegasus Airlines, Enter Air, and TUI Airways. Additionally, four aircraft are scheduled to be transferred to Air Peace in Nigeria by late 2024.

This expansion is part of ASG’s broader strategy, which includes ownership of several airlines such as SmartLynx Airlines, Avion Express, Ascend Airways, KlasJet, BBN Indonesia Airlines, Skytrans, and Magma Aviation. With nine Air Operator’s Certificates (AOCs) across Europe, Indonesia, Thailand, and Australia, ASG operates a fleet of 214 aircraft.

In addition to airline operations, ASG provides a comprehensive range of aviation services, including Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO), pilot and crew recruitment and training, ground handling, and more.
