Airjet Angola ERJ‑145 Destroyed by Fire After Kolwezi Landing Accident

In Kolwezi, Democratic Republic of Congo, on November 17, 2025, an Airjet Angola Embraer ERJ‑145 (registration D2‑AJB) operating as flight MBC‑100 was destroyed by fire after a landing accident at Kolwezi Airport. The aircraft, carrying 26 passengers and 3 crew, touched down before the displaced threshold of runway 29, causing the main landing gear to collapse. The jet skidded off the runway and came to rest on its belly, where flames erupted in the tail section.
All occupants evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported, though the aircraft was completely burned down.
Aircraft Carrying Minister of Mines
The ERJ‑145 had been chartered to transport the DR Congo Minister of Mines and a delegation from the Ministry. The officials were traveling to Kolwezi to inspect the site of a fatal mining accident at the Kalando Mine, where more than 40 workers died on November 15, 2025 following a reported bridge collapse caused by heavy rains.
Kolwezi Airport Conditions
Kolwezi Airport features a single runway (11/29) measuring 2,410 meters (7,900 feet). At the time of the incident, the threshold of runway 29 had been displaced by 1,000 meters due to ongoing construction work, reducing the available landing distance and complicating approach procedures.
Investigation Launched
The DR Congo Bureau Permanent d’Enquêtes d’Accidents (BPEA) has opened an investigation into the accident. Officials confirmed the aircraft had operated from Kinshasa N’Djili to Kolwezi via Lubumbashi before the crash. The BPEA reported that while the aircraft was destroyed, the incident resulted in material damage only, with no fatalities.
