Airport lounges are no longer just places to relax and enjoy a drink before a flight. Airlines and credit card companies are investing in upgrading their lounges with restaurants, exercise equipment, work spaces and other amenities to attract and retain high-end customers.

One example is the United Polaris Lounge at Dulles International Airport (IAD), which opened in June 2021. The lounge caters to international business travelers who fly in United Polaris business class or first class on a Star Alliance member airline. The lounge features two luxury Quiet Suites, where guests can rest in a daybed with Saks Fifth Avenue bedding, and six shower suites, where guests can freshen up with Cowshed spa products. The lounge also offers a full-service restaurant, a buffet, a bar, a work area, and a relaxation area.

Another example is the Delta Sky Club at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), which was renovated in 2021. The lounge serves domestic and international travelers who fly in Delta One, Delta Premium Select, or first class, or who have Sky Club membership or certain credit cards. The lounge boasts soundproof booths for private calls or meetings, a covered patio overlooking the airfield, and an art gallery featuring local artists. The lounge also provides a chef-designed menu, a wine wall, a coffee bar, and wellness amenities such as Peloton bikes and yoga mats.

The American Express Centurion Lounge is a network of airport lounges that are exclusive to American Express Platinum and Centurion cardholders. The lounges are located at 14 airports in the US and abroad, including Dallas/Fort Worth, Hong Kong, Las Vegas, Miami, New York LaGuardia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Sydney. The lounges offer premium amenities such as chef-designed menus, wine tastings, spa services, family rooms, workspaces, and high-speed Wi-Fi.

These are just some of the examples of how airport lounges are becoming more luxurious and diverse to meet the needs and preferences of different travelers. As travel demand recovers from the pandemic, airport lounges are expected to play a key role in enhancing customer loyalty and satisfaction.
