Airlines Cite Operational Challenges in New Route Launches

At Routes World, airline leaders outlined significant operational challenges deterring the launch of new routes, including night curfews, slow aircraft turnarounds, and limited airport slots. Agi Smith, head of airport development at EasyJet, emphasized that overall operating costs are the most critical factor for airlines. This includes ground handling expenses, the need for non-airbridge dual-door disembarkation, and efficient turnaround times of 35 to 40 minutes. EasyJet aims to partner with airports that incentivize quicker turnarounds and the use of quieter aircraft.

Special operational equipment requirements also play a vital role in route planning. For instance, EasyJet’s new service to Cape Verde requires aircraft with satellite communication capabilities. Additionally, extending operational seasonality relies on data regarding the availability of shops and restaurants during non-peak periods.

Regulatory restrictions, particularly night curfews, pose significant concerns. Smith noted that if aircraft cannot land before curfews, it leads to overnight accommodations for passengers and crew, increasing the likelihood of flight cancellations the following day. This situation diminishes the business case for basing aircraft at certain airports.

Traffic rights can introduce additional challenges, particularly if last-minute hurdles arise. Michael Simionescu, head of airport partnerships at AirAsia Group, agreed that having sufficient slots available for growth is crucial, along with incentives for cargo operations to support its fleet of dedicated freighters.

Henri-Charles Ozarovsky, TAP Portugal’s group head of strategy, echoed the importance of cargo in route planning and expressed concerns about capacity reductions on established routes. He highlighted the need for clarity regarding these capacity restrictions, stating, “We’re trying to manage this while ensuring efficiency and sustainability in our operations.”
