Airlink, South Africa’s full-service regional airline, has signed a lease agreement with U.S.-based lessor Azorra for ten new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft. The first delivery is expected later this year, with all aircraft scheduled to arrive by 2027.

The Johannesburg-based carrier has been a long-time Embraer operator, flying the manufacturer’s aircraft since 2001. Its current fleet of 68 aircraft includes several earlier-generation E-Jets, making the transition to the E2 model a natural step in its fleet modernization strategy.

The E195-E2 is Embraer’s largest and most fuel-efficient E-Jet variant, offering lower emissions, reduced operating costs, and extended range compared to its predecessors. The aircraft will be configured in a two-by-two seating arrangement for up to 136 passengers, eliminating middle seats and enhancing onboard comfort.

Supplied directly from Embraer’s production facilities in Brazil, the new jets will enable Airlink to boost capacity on busy regional routes and expand service to new destinations across sub-Saharan Africa. The aircraft’s efficiency and environmental performance also support the airline’s long-term sustainability objectives.

Operationally, Airlink will benefit from significant fleet commonality. The E195-E2 shares similar flightdeck design, handling characteristics, and operating procedures with the airline’s existing Embraer models, simplifying pilot training and ensuring a seamless entry into service. This compatibility is expected to reduce costs, minimise operational disruptions, and accelerate deployment.

The deal with Azorra underscores Airlink’s commitment to growth, efficiency, and enhanced passenger experience as it strengthens its position in the competitive African aviation market.
