Akureyri Airport Expands to Increase Passenger Capacity
Akureyri Airport in Iceland has recently celebrated the inauguration of a new terminal and airfield, a significant development that expands its capacity to handle an additional 500,000 passengers and increases its aircraft accommodation from five to 14. Located approximately 2 miles south of Akureyri town, the airport is operated by Isavia, Iceland’s national airport and air navigation service provider.
The expansion includes a 33,000 m² terminal, positioned to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the airport. As of December 2024, Akureyri Airport handles about 200,000 passengers annually, with international traffic making up approximately 16% of the total. The expansion is expected to bolster both domestic and international travel.
Currently, Akureyri Airport is serviced by four airlines: easyJet, Icelandair, Norlandair, and Smartwings. These carriers provide vital connections within Iceland and link Akureyri to major international cities including London, Manchester, and Prague.
