Alaska Airlines is set to revolutionize its pilot training program by investing in the development of the first hyper-realistic, full-motion Boeing 737 virtual reality simulator. This innovative training tool, built using extended reality technology, is designed to offer an immersive experience that mirrors real-world flight conditions. Developed by Swiss aviation simulation company Loft Dynamics, which is renowned for creating the only FAA- and EASA-approved VR helicopter flight simulator, the new Boeing 737 VR simulator represents a significant leap forward in pilot training for fixed-wing aircraft. With the support of Alaska Airlines’ pilot training team, Loft Dynamics is applying its expertise in VR simulation to create a tool that promises to enhance training effectiveness and operational safety for commercial pilots.

The new simulator will incorporate advanced technologies to deliver a truly lifelike experience. It features a six-degrees-of-freedom full-motion platform that provides realistic force feedback and haptic sensations, ensuring that every subtle movement and aerodynamic response is faithfully reproduced. In addition, the simulator will offer 360-degree panoramic 3D visuals, which are designed to deliver unparalleled spatial awareness and create detailed representations of diverse flight scenarios, including various weather conditions and challenging situations. The integration of full-body pose tracking technology means that the simulator can accurately capture the movements of pilots within the cockpit, allowing for a precise replication of real cockpit interactions and improving muscle memory. Although the long-term objective is to achieve full FAA certification for the VR simulator, Alaska Airlines is initially focused on integrating the new system into its existing FAA-approved training programs. Jeff Severns, Managing Director of Flight Operations Training at Alaska Airlines, remarked that pilot training has evolved significantly over the past 30 years. He noted that the potential of Loft Dynamics’ hyper-realistic VR simulator could transform commercial pilot training by offering a fully immersive, high-fidelity experience that replicates real-world flight conditions. Severns also emphasized that the compact design of the simulator means it can fit in spaces as small as a standard office, making it a flexible and accessible solution for modern training needs.

By becoming Loft Dynamics’ first fixed-wing customer, Alaska Airlines is positioning itself to set a new industry standard in pilot training.
