Alaska Airlines has unveiled a strategic partnership and investment in Assaia, a Swiss-based company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for airport and airline operations. This collaboration aims to advance the development and deployment of Assaia’s AI-based turnaround technology, which Alaska Airlines has been using to enhance its turnaround processes and operational efficiency.

The turnaround process is a critical phase in airline operations, involving tasks such as passenger and baggage handling, refueling, cleaning, catering, and safety checks. Ensuring efficient turnarounds is essential for airline profitability, punctuality, and passenger satisfaction, as delays during this phase can have significant impacts on flight schedules and overall operational costs.

Assaia’s technology leverages cameras and AI algorithms to monitor and analyze the turnaround process in real time. By providing valuable data and insights, the technology helps airlines and ground handlers optimize their operations. Furthermore, it can alert staff to potential issues or deviations from standard procedures, allowing for proactive corrective actions and the prevention of delays.

Alaska Airlines has been an early adopter of Assaia’s technology, implementing it at several of its hubs since 2019. The airline has reported substantial benefits, including a 10-minute reduction in average turnaround times, a 4% improvement in on-time performance, and annual fuel savings exceeding 480,000 gallons.

Pasha Saleh, Corporate Development Director for Alaska Airlines, expressed the airline’s commitment to innovation and its excitement for this partnership with Assaia. He highlighted the potential for this collaboration to enhance safety, efficiency, and the passenger experience. Saleh emphasized that this partnership represents a significant step forward in the application of machine learning in the aviation industry.

Max Diez, CEO of Assaia, welcomed Alaska Airlines as a strategic partner and investor. He praised Alaska Airlines for being at the forefront of AI-based turnaround technology adoption and acknowledged the value and potential demonstrated by the airline. Diez expressed anticipation for collaborating with Alaska Airlines to further develop and enhance Assaia’s products and services, emphasizing the bright future of machine learning applications in aviation.
