Alaska Airlines to Offer Free Starlink Wi-Fi Fleetwide by 2027

Alaska Airlines has announced plans on Aug. 20 to roll out free high-speed Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet by 2027, becoming the second major U.S. carrier to partner with SpaceX for in-flight internet service. The move follows Hawaiian Airlines, which began deploying Starlink connectivity earlier this year.
The partnership with SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network promises to deliver low-latency, high-bandwidth internet to passengers, enabling streaming, video calls, and real-time browsing at cruising altitude—without additional fees.
“We’re committed to elevating the passenger experience,” said Alaska Airlines CTO, “and Starlink allows us to offer seamless, reliable Wi-Fi from gate to gate.”
As of now, Alaska Airlines offers inflight Wi-Fi through Intelsat’s 2Ku system, formerly operated by Gogo. This service is available on most of its Boeing and Airbus aircraft and provides Ku-band satellite connectivity. Passengers can browse, stream, and message during flights, though the speed and reliability can vary depending on the route and aircraft.
Alaska Airlines will begin retrofitting its aircraft to SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network, which will replace its current provider starting in late 2025. The rollout begins in December 2025, with full fleet coverage—including regional jets operated by Horizon Air and SkyWest—expected by early 2027. The new Starlink service will offer ultra-fast, low-latency internet and will be free for Atmos Rewards members, Alaska’s new loyalty program.
Unlike traditional satellite Wi-Fi systems, Starlink uses a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites, which significantly reduces latency and improves speed. The technology has already gained traction in remote areas, cruise ships, and now commercial aviation.
With Hawaiian Airlines already offering Starlink on select transpacific flights, Alaska’s announcement signals a broader industry shift toward free, fast in-flight Wi-Fi powered by SpaceX. Analysts expect more carriers to follow suit as passenger demand for reliable connectivity grows.
