AlisCargo, based at Milan Malpensa, has officially resumed its flight operations on July 19, 2024, marking a significant reboot in its cargo services. The airline re-launched with a direct flight from Milan to Hong Kong International, utilizing its solitary Boeing 777-200F, reflecting its strategic emphasis on expanding its cargo operations under the aegis of its parent company, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company.

The aircraft was initially delivered from Everett to Milan Malpensa between June 30 and July 1. Before entering into revenue service, AlisCargo conducted several test flights in the regions around Milan and Brescia, ensuring the aircraft’s readiness for operational duties. The Milan-Hong Kong route is set to operate twice weekly, enhancing trade connectivity between Europe and Asia.

Italian civil aviation authority, ENAC, reactivated AlisCargo’s Operating Licence on July 1, a move that aligns with MSC’s broader strategy to fortify its position in the global air cargo market. “The acquisition of AlisCargo and the induction of this aircraft are pivotal in MSC’s air cargo strategy, allowing us to utilize our European Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) to boost efficiency and better serve our trading routes,” stated Jannie Davel, Senior Vice-President of MSC Air Cargo.

Previously suspended in December 2022, AlisCargo had operated two converted 777-200ER freighters before its acquisition by MSC in mid-2023. The planned restart in “early 2024” has materialized mid-year, with the airline currently operating alongside four 777-200Fs chartered from Atlas Air under an exclusive agreement, focusing on maintaining a fleet of five maindeck freighters.

This strategic relaunch not only signifies a fresh chapter for AlisCargo but also positions it competitively against other in-house cargo carriers like CMA CGM Air Cargo and Maersk Air Cargo, enhancing its role in the dynamic air freight sector between Europe and Asia.
