All Nippon ANA Launches New Stockholm Route as Part of European Expansion
All Nippon Airways (ANA) is expanding its European network with the addition of Stockholm, Sweden, to its roster of destinations. Starting on January 31, ANA will operate a 3X-weekly service between Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Stockholm Arlanda Airport, utilizing Boeing 787-8 aircraft. This new route is the second of three new European routes launched by the airline this month, following the debut of flights to Milan Malpensa Airport in December. Flights to Istanbul will commence in February.
Despite Scandinavian Airlines’ recent switch from the Star Alliance to SkyTeam, Stockholm marks an important addition to ANA’s network. Japan is Sweden’s second-largest trading partner in Asia, with close to 150 Swedish companies operating in Japan. Similarly, Sweden is Japan’s largest Nordic export market, with roughly 180 Japanese companies having a presence in the country, further strengthening the business connections between the two nations.
Air Serbia Expands Europe-Asia Connectivity
Air Serbia is also making moves to expand its European and Asian connections with a new route between Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Starting January 11, Air Serbia will operate two weekly flights on the Airbus A330-200. This follows the airline’s recent launch of a route to Guangzhou, China, in September, although Air Serbia suspended its Tianjin service in November.
Other New January Routes and Resumptions
Other airlines are also making significant additions to their schedules in January. Delta Air Lines is launching service between Boston Logan International Airport and São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport in Brazil on January 6. JetBlue Airways is beginning its inaugural flights from Manchester-Boston Regional Airport in New Hampshire. Meanwhile, Qatar Airways has resumed flights to Abha International Airport in Saudi Arabia, increasing its destination count in the country to 11, with twice-weekly services from Doha’s Hamad International Airport starting on January 2.
ITA Airways Relaunches Flights to Libya
In a notable move, ITA Airways is relaunching flights from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Tripoli’s Mitiga International Airport (MJI) on January 12, operating twice a week using A319 aircraft. This re-entry into the Libyan market comes despite a Conflict Zone Information Bulletin issued by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in October, warning against flights to Libyan airspace due to security risks. ITA Airways, however, has coordinated closely with the Italian and Libyan governments, along with Italy’s Civil Aviation Authority, to ensure the safety of its operations. The airline will approach Mitiga International Airport from the Mediterranean Sea, in compliance with the necessary safety protocols.
These new routes and resumptions reflect the continued recovery and expansion of global air travel, with airlines strengthening their international networks and offering more travel options for passengers around the world.
