Alvin Brown Sues Trump Over Removal From NTSB Board Position

Former Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown is suing former President Donald Trump, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy, and the NTSB after being removed from his position as Vice Chair without cause. Brown, a Democrat, alleges his termination violated the board’s independence and interfered with its legal mandate to investigate serious transportation accidents across air, rail, highway, and marine sectors.

In his lawsuit filed in D.C. federal court, Brown argues that his dismissal caused “significant and damaging consequences” for the NTSB’s work, though the filing does not specify the exact consequences. Brown’s legal team claims that his May termination letter from Trent Morse, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, offered no justification for his removal.

Brown’s complaint highlights his long career in urban planning, transportation, and public service. He previously served as senior advisor to former Commerce Secretary Ron Brown, policy advisor to Vice President Al Gore, and executive director of the White House Community Empowerment Board. Brown was also the first Black mayor of Jacksonville, Florida, serving from 2011 to 2015, and held leadership roles with the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The lawsuit seeks Brown’s reinstatement to the NTSB through the end of his original term in 2026. He is represented by Democracy Forward Foundation and Justice Legal Strategies, two firms known for challenging actions they view as undermining democratic norms.
