AME Expands Pacific Air Connectivity in Mexico
Aeropuertos Mexicanos (AME), the operator of Riviera Nayarit International Airport (TPQ) and Puerto Escondido International Airport (PMX), is making significant strides to expand air connectivity along Mexico’s Pacific coast while simultaneously bolstering airport infrastructure and commercial development. As a key member of the new Mexican Tourist Airport Group, a public-private partnership, AME is dedicated to enhancing the nation’s air transport network and elevating service standards for both passengers and airlines. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to transform Mexico’s Pacific coast into an even more attractive destination for domestic and international travelers alike.
At Puerto Escondido International Airport, which is situated in a rapidly growing tourism region, passenger traffic reached 1 million in 2024. Currently operating four domestic routes, PMX is poised to expand its service offerings to include international flights once its new terminal is completed. The new facility, boasting an 18,000 m² terminal, will provide the necessary capacity and modern amenities to support a growing demand for travel, and is expected to play a pivotal role in driving further regional tourism. AME’s commitment to upgrading infrastructure at PMX demonstrates its determination to keep pace with increasing passenger numbers and the evolving needs of airlines operating in the region.
Meanwhile, Riviera Nayarit International Airport has secured a strategic partnership with Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier Volaris to launch its first international service. This new route, set to operate three times a week, will connect TPQ with Los Angeles International Airport beginning in July. This milestone route is the result of several productive discussions during Routes events and is seen as a significant boost to the airport’s international profile. By establishing direct connections to major hubs like Los Angeles, TPQ aims to not only attract more visitors to the region but also to enhance the overall competitiveness of Mexico’s Pacific air network.
AME is actively engaged in discussions with three major Mexican airlines as it seeks to further diversify and strengthen its route network. In addition, the organization is working on plans to attract United Airlines to Puerto Escondido International Airport. Such partnerships are expected to open up additional routes to key destinations along the West Coast of the United States, including San Francisco, Seattle, and Vancouver. These routes will benefit from fast connections due to the proximity of major hubs within a short travel distance from both TPQ and PMX, ultimately providing travelers with convenient and efficient options.
Speaking at Routes Americas 2025 in Nassau and Paradise Island, AME’s director general Javier García Bejos emphasized the importance of using Routes as an awareness platform to launch the organization’s ambitious projects. He expressed enthusiasm about the opportunities to build a robust business case while networking with industry leaders and cementing AME’s position within the competitive market. With these initiatives, AME is not only reinforcing its role as a key player in Mexico’s aviation landscape but is also setting the stage for sustained growth in air connectivity along the Pacific coast, benefiting both the tourism sector and the broader economy.
