American Airlines is reportedly on the brink of finalizing a significant order for approximately 100 narrowbody aircraft, comprising a mix of Airbus A321neo and Boeing 737-8 models. Additionally, the airline is exploring the possibility of ordering Airbus A350 jets as a strategic move to replace its aging Boeing 777-200ER fleet.

This potential order, which is expected to be evenly distributed between Airbus and Boeing—with Airbus possibly securing a larger portion of the deal—signals a major fleet modernization effort by the Dallas/Fort Worth-based carrier. The announcement of this substantial acquisition could coincide with the airline’s investor meeting scheduled for early March.

This development marks a notable shift in American Airlines’ fleet strategy, as the airline had previously canceled an order for A350s inherited from its merger with US Airways, opting instead to streamline its widebody fleet with Boeing aircraft exclusively. The airline’s fleet strategy during the COVID-19 pandemic included sidelining its fifteen A330-200s, which remain inactive to date.

Devon May, American Airlines’ Chief Financial Officer, indicated in October 2023 that the airline was in active discussions with both Boeing and Airbus regarding its future narrowbody aircraft needs for the latter half of the 2020s and beyond. This forward-looking approach underscores the airline’s commitment to refreshing its fleet to meet medium- and long-term operational requirements.

American Airlines currently operates a diverse fleet of 1,002 aircraft, which includes a mix of Airbus and Boeing models, as well as twenty inactive MD-83s. The airline’s extensive order book further emphasizes its ambitious fleet expansion plans, featuring 162 future aircraft deliveries across various models, including the A321neo, 737 MAX, and the 787 Dreamliner series.

This strategic fleet expansion and modernization initiative by American Airlines highlights the airline’s efforts to enhance operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and improve the overall passenger experience. As American Airlines navigates the complexities of fleet management and market demands, this potential order represents a significant investment in the carrier’s future competitiveness and sustainability in the global aviation industry.
