American Airlines Debuts Flagship Suites, Phasing Out First Class

American Airlines is redefining its premium experience with the launch of its new Flagship Suites, marking a pivotal shift away from traditional first-class service toward an enhanced business-class product. The new suite design will debut on June 5 on flights between Chicago O’Hare and London Heathrow aboard the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. With this launch, American begins its transition to a premium experience anchored in comfort, privacy, and cutting-edge technology, all while retiring first-class cabins from its long-haul fleet.
The newly designed Flagship Suites feature 51 private pods arranged in a one-two-one layout, allowing each passenger direct aisle access. Each seat includes a fully closing sliding door, a 79-inch lie-flat bed, and a 17.5-inch 4K entertainment screen. Passengers also benefit from Bluetooth audio, universal power outlets, USB-A and USB-C charging, and a wireless charging pad. Privacy is enhanced with retractable dividers between center seats and forward-facing positioning that ensures each traveler enjoys a cocooned personal space. The Flagship Preferred Suites—bulkhead seats—offer even more space, with up to 42% more living area and distinct styling, including blue faux-wood finishes and additional storage compartments.
Comfort-focused details abound, including a Nest Bedding pillow with dual-sided fabric, duvet, and slippers for all Flagship Suite passengers. Travelers in Preferred Suites also receive pajamas, a throw blanket, and a mattress pad. Additional amenities include an in-flight kit from Thirteen Lune by Joanna Vargas and Bang & Olufsen noise-canceling headphones. While meal service enhancements are yet to be detailed, the suite’s amenities clearly signal a blend of luxury and practicality.
Beyond the business cabin, American is updating premium economy and economy classes. Premium economy features 35 seats in a two-three-two layout with recliner-style comfort, 13-inch 4K screens, wireless charging pads, and multiple power options. Economy offers 143 seats in a three-three-three setup, each equipped with an 11.5-inch 4K screen and full charging access.
The Flagship Suite rollout will expand in 2024 and 2025 with new routes including Philadelphia to London starting August 6, Philadelphia to Zurich on September 3, and Dallas Fort Worth to Brisbane launching October 26. These suites will be installed on all new Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A321XLR deliveries and retrofitted into existing Boeing 777-300ERs. By 2027, American aims to complete the transformation across its long-haul fleet.
This bold move reflects shifting consumer preferences. American’s executives say travelers are more willing to pay for a luxurious business-class experience than for outdated first-class options. With added privacy, technology, and comfort, the Flagship Suites represent the next era of premium transatlantic travel, allowing American to better compete in the global market while aligning its offering with evolving passenger expectations.
