American Airlines Expands Winter Sun Routes
Even though spring has only just taken hold, American Airlines is already preparing for winter by expanding its service to warm-weather destinations for travelers chasing sun year-round. The Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier recently announced plans to roll out new international routes to popular destinations in Mexico and the Dominican Republic, while also extending service to Hawaii and South America this winter. In a press release, Brian Znotins, American’s senior vice president of network planning, stated that the airline’s comprehensive global network is designed to give customers more access to the destinations they want to visit. With new routes, increased flights on popular corridors, and extended seasonal service, American’s schedule is set to offer an enticing escape to sun, sand, and more next winter.
Among the most significant additions are five new flights connecting U.S. cities to Caribbean hot spots. Notably, American Airlines will launch service from Oklahoma City’s Will Rogers International Airport to Mexico’s Cancun International Airport on November 8, marking the first international flight from Oklahoma. Additionally, new routes will connect Indianapolis, Nashville, Pittsburgh, and Raleigh-Durham with Punta Cana International Airport in the Dominican Republic, all beginning on December 6. These flights, operating on Saturdays aboard a Boeing 737, provide travelers with a convenient way to trade cold winters for the warmth of the Caribbean. The route expansion comes as both Cancun and Punta Cana have recently become even more attractive, with several all-inclusive resorts opening in 2024, including properties such as Hyatt Vivid Grand Island, Secrets Playa Blanca Costa Mujeres, and Ava Resort Cancun, as well as the new Zel Punta Cana hotel, a collaboration between Meliá Hotels International and Rafael Nadal.
American Airlines is also boosting its long-haul network this fall and winter by enhancing connections to Hawaii and South America. The airline will launch a daily nonstop service from Chicago O’Hare International Airport to Honolulu, Hawaii’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, starting October 26, using a Boeing 787-8 aircraft. Furthermore, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport will see an increase in Hawaiian travel options, with a second daily service to Maui’s Kahului Airport and daily flights to Hawaii’s Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, both commencing on November 20. In South America, American is expanding its service with a new route from DFW to São Paulo’s Governor Andre Franco Montoro International Airport, offering ten weekly flights beginning December 3, and from Miami International Airport to Buenos Aires, Argentina, with four daily flights starting December 18. These new routes are part of a broader strategy to cater to a growing international travel demand.
The airline is also extending summer service on select European routes. Existing service from Philadelphia to Athens will continue through November 17, while New York’s JFK to Barcelona now runs through December 2, and the Dallas-Fort Worth to Dublin route is extended through January 6, 2026. These enhancements reinforce American Airlines’ commitment to providing year-round connectivity and robust network options for leisure and business travelers alike. With this expansion, passengers can look forward to a winter season filled with new opportunities to escape to warm destinations, making it easier than ever to plan a getaway, no matter how cold it gets elsewhere.
