American Airlines, the largest airline in the world, announced that it will start a new transcontinental route from Miami to John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County, California, beginning in January 2022. The new route will offer daily nonstop service between the two destinations, using Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 16 first-class seats and 156 economy seats.

The new route will be the fifth transcontinental route that American Airlines operates from Miami, joining the existing routes to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and New York. The airline says that the new route will provide more options and convenience for customers traveling between South Florida and Southern California, as well as connecting opportunities to other domestic and international destinations.

“As Miami’s hometown airline, we’re proud to offer our customers great service options internationally and domestically with flights that reach coast to coast,” said Juan Carlos Liscano, American’s vice president of Miami hub operations, in a press release.

The new route will also benefit the Orange County community, which has been seeking more direct flights to the East Coast. John Wayne Airport is the second largest airport in the Los Angeles area, serving more than 10 million passengers annually. The airport is located near popular attractions such as Disneyland, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach.

“We are thrilled to welcome American Airlines’ new transcontinental service to John Wayne Airport,” said Barry Rondinella, airport director, in a statement. “This new service will provide our passengers with more choices and convenience when traveling across the country.”

The new route will be available for booking starting on August 23. The first flight will depart from Miami on January 5, 2022 at 8:50 p.m. and arrive in Orange County at 11:14 p.m. The return flight will depart from Orange County on January 6, 2022 at 12:05 a.m. and arrive in Miami at 7:59 a.m.
