American Airlines Faces Heathrow Catering Crisis

American Airlines is grappling with a significant catering disruption at London Heathrow Airport, forcing operational adjustments on its busy transatlantic network and prompting travel experts to advise passengers to prepare for reduced onboard service or potential delays.
The issue affects flights departing Heathrow, one of American’s most important international hubs. The airline operates up to 19 daily flights between London and nine U.S. cities, accounting for nearly a quarter of all seats between Heathrow and the United States.
While the airline has not publicly detailed the root cause, industry sources suggest the disruption may be linked to a transition between catering providers. Reports indicate the new supplier is struggling to manage the scale of American’s Heathrow operation.
To mitigate the impact, American has reportedly implemented “double catering,” a rare practice in which catering for both the outbound and return flights is loaded at the U.S. departure point. Under normal operations, long-haul flights receive a fresh catering uplift at the destination airport before the return leg.
Double catering presents logistical challenges. Aircraft galleys are typically designed to store catering for a single flight segment. Loading additional supplies can require service reductions due to limited storage space, and there are concerns about maintaining food freshness across extended ground times.
In some instances, aircraft that were already double catered have reportedly also received additional catering at Heathrow, contributing to ground delays as crews reconcile duplicate inventory and reconfigure galleys.
The disruption comes at a sensitive time for CEO Robert Isom, who recently pledged to restore American’s standing as a premium global carrier. The airline reported a sharp profit decline in 2025, and labor unions have voiced concerns over leadership and strategy.
While competitors such as Delta Air Lines and United Airlines continue to emphasize premium service offerings, American’s catering challenges risk undermining its positioning on one of the most competitive transatlantic routes.
Passengers scheduled to travel from Heathrow in the coming days are advised to monitor their flight status and consider bringing snacks, as onboard service levels may be temporarily reduced while the airline works to stabilize its catering operation.
