A recent incident involving an American Airlines passenger has resulted in a sentencing. Cynthia McKnight, a 24-year-old resident of Rochester, NY, was aboard a flight from Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) on April 19, 2022. The situation escalated when McKnight engaged in an argument with another passenger while the aircraft was awaiting departure with closed doors.

During the altercation, McKnight resorted to spitting at another passenger, prompting the American Airlines crew to make the decision to return to the gate. As the aircraft was still on the ground, McKnight attempted to exit the plane, pushing a flight attendant who intervened to prevent her from opening an aircraft door.

Despite the flight attendants’ efforts to dissuade her, McKnight managed to open the door, leading to the automatic deployment of the emergency slide. She made her exit using the slide, but was apprehended by airport officials and transportation authorities on the tarmac, where she admitted to being intoxicated.

Reports suggest that McKnight’s frustration stemmed from the flight delay. US District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo has sentenced her to time served and three years of probation. Additionally, as part of her sentence and plea agreement, McKnight has been ordered to pay $42,128 (£34,073).

The incident serves as a reminder of the consequences of disruptive behavior onboard flights and the commitment of airlines and authorities to maintain passenger safety.
