American Airlines Plans New Phoenix-San Diego Route Amid Hurdles

American Airlines (AA) is planning to launch up to two daily flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor and San Diego McClellan Palomar, using E175 aircraft via its subsidiary, Envoy Air. The new route is slated to begin on February 13, 2025. However, the airline is facing regulatory hurdles before it can proceed with its plans.

The County of San Diego has yet to approve a lease that would allow American Airlines to operate out of San Diego McClellan Palomar. The airport, which is designed to accommodate smaller aircraft, is currently served by charter operators like JSX Air and Advanced Air, with flights from aircraft such as the E145, E135, and Do328-300 to destinations like Las Vegas Harry Reid, Mammoth Lakes, and Scottsdale. Allowing larger planes like the E175 to operate from the airport would require adjustments to the existing infrastructure and approval from local authorities.

In addition to the lease issue, American Airlines faces challenges with the Voluntary Noise Abatement Program (VNAP) at San Diego McClellan Palomar. The program aims to limit aircraft noise by preventing flights before 0700L (1500Z). American is proposing that one of its flights depart at 0615L (1415Z) to connect passengers with its Phoenix hub, but this would require a waiver of the noise restrictions.

United Airlines (UA) was the last major carrier to serve San Diego McClellan Palomar, operating flights from Los Angeles International until it ended service in 2015. The entry of American Airlines into the airport marks a potential shift in the market, offering more flight options to and from the region.

Dahvia Lynch, deputy chief administrative officer for the County of San Diego, has urged the County’s Board of Supervisors to approve a two-year lease for American Airlines and to waive USD 351,428 in partial fees and charges for the first year of operations. The approval of these terms would help facilitate the new service, but it remains to be seen whether the county will grant the airline’s requests.

As American Airlines seeks to expand its operations and strengthen its network, the approval of the Phoenix-San Diego route could help increase competition and enhance air travel options for passengers in the region. The resolution of these regulatory challenges will be crucial to the successful launch of the new service.
