American Airlines Sues Kuehne + Nagel Over $500,000 Engine Damage

American Airlines has filed a lawsuit against Kuehne + Nagel, one of the world’s leading logistics firms, after an aircraft engine sustained over $500,000 in damages during shipping. The lawsuit, lodged in a North Texas district court, seeks compensation for the damages inflicted on a Rolls-Royce engine used in the airline’s Boeing 777 fleet.

The conflict stems from an incident where the engine, after undergoing significant maintenance in Hong Kong, was transported back to American Airlines’ extensive maintenance facility in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Although Kuehne + Nagel successfully delivered the engine to Hong Kong in June 2021, the return shipment reportedly resulted in substantial damage to critical components, including the overspeed protection unit, power conditioning system, and electrical harness.

Despite three years of negotiations, Kuehne + Nagel has allegedly refused to cover the repair costs, prompting American Airlines to take legal action. The carrier claims that the logistics company failed to implement reasonable measures to protect the engine during transit, constituting a breach of contract and negligence.

American Airlines is demanding that Kuehne + Nagel reimburse the $520,246 repair cost and additional compensatory damages. This lawsuit marks a significant dispute between the airline and its long-time shipping partner, highlighting the challenges and risks associated with transporting high-value aviation components.
