American Airlines to Boost Phoenix Sky Harbor Flights with New and Expanded Routes
American Airlines, the largest carrier at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX), has announced plans to expand its presence at the desert hub this winter. The airline will increase service on 26 existing routes from PHX, launch a new route to Jacksonville, Florida, and resume service to Wichita, Kansas.
What’s New and What’s Back at Phoenix Sky Harbor
Starting from November 5th, American Airlines will introduce a new daily nonstop flight from PHX to Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), making it the fourth nonstop destination to Florida from Phoenix, along with Miami, Orlando, and Tampa. The flight will be operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft with 150 seats, including 12 in first class and 138 in economy class.
On the same day, American Airlines will also bring back its daily nonstop flight from PHX to Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport (ICT), which was suspended in 2019. The flight will be operated by a CRJ-700 regional jet with 65 seats, including nine in first class and 56 in economy class.
Both the Jacksonville and Wichita flights are scheduled as follows (all times local):
- PHX-JAX: Depart at 5:00 PM and arrive at 10:01 PM
- JAX-PHX: Depart at 8:00 AM and arrive at 9:37 AM
- PHX-ICT: Depart at 12:55 PM and arrive at 3:55 PM
- ICT-PHX: Depart at 4:25 PM and arrive at 5:25 PM
In addition to the new and resumed routes, American Airlines will also add more frequencies on 26 existing routes from PHX this winter, offering more options and flexibility for travelers.
The increased service represents a more than 12% growth in daily flights and a nearly 4% growth in seat capacity compared to last winter, making it one of the largest winter schedules that American Airlines has offered from PHX in nearly a decade.
American Airlines is Growing at Phoenix Sky Harbor
American Airlines has been serving PHX since 1930 and has made it one of its main hubs after merging with US Airways in 2015. The airline currently operates more than 250 daily flights from PHX to over 90 destinations across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Costa Rica.
The airline’s expansion at PHX reflects its confidence in the Phoenix market and its commitment to meeting the demand for travel as the industry recovers from the pandemic. PHX is also a strategic hub for American Airlines to connect passengers to its domestic and international network, especially to the West Coast and Latin America.
“Although we’ve not yet reached the halfway point of the summer travel season, we’re already focusing on how we can best serve our customers this winter,” said Sophia Philis-Ortiz, American’s vice president of PHX hub operations. “Thanks to the additional flight offerings, we will be providing additional seat capacity that allows us to welcome more customers in Phoenix than we did last winter.”
