All Nippon Airways has officially retired its R2-D2-themed Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner after a decade of service. The aircraft was introduced in 2015 as part of a collaboration between ANA and Disney to celebrate the Star Wars franchise, making it one of the most recognizable special liveries in aviation history.

The R2-D2 ANA Jet completed its final flight on August 6, operating from Washington Dulles International Airport to Tokyo Haneda Airport. Fans and aviation enthusiasts marked the occasion, with many sharing images of the aircraft’s last journey on social media.

Designed with a striking blue and white exterior to resemble the beloved Star Wars droid, the aircraft quickly became a favorite among travelers and collectors. Inside, the jet featured themed details such as Star Wars-inspired headrest covers and in-flight entertainment options that further enhanced the passenger experience.

An ANA spokesperson reflected on the aircraft’s retirement, noting, “The R2-D2 ANA Jet has served us well, but like all droids, it eventually needs to power down.” The airline added that the collaboration helped connect with global audiences and brought excitement to passengers of all ages.

The retirement of the R2-D2 787 does not mark the end of ANA’s connection to the Star Wars universe, as other themed aircraft, including C-3PO and BB-8 liveries, remain part of its fleet. Still, the conclusion of the R2-D2 jet’s service closes a memorable chapter in ANA’s history and highlights the airline’s commitment to unique passenger experiences.
