Antarctica21 Announces Construction of New Expedition Ship, Magellan Discoverer, for Unique Fly-and-Sail Antarctica Voyages

Antarctica21, a leader in Antarctic expeditions, has unveiled plans for a new expedition ship, the Magellan Discoverer, set to enhance its fly-and-sail voyages starting in the 2026-27 season. This announcement marks a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to offering unparalleled experiences in exploring the Antarctic region.

The Magellan Discoverer is being designed as a sister ship to the Magellan Explorer, which made its debut in November 2019. With a PC6 ice-class rating, this vessel promises a boutique, yacht-like aesthetic, blending modern elegance with advanced technical features. According to Jaime Vásquez, president of Antarctica21, the ship embodies the company’s dedication to sustainability and meeting the rising expectations of its guests. The vessel’s design and capabilities are aimed at ensuring seamless comfort while supporting the ongoing effort to deliver exceptional Antarctic experiences.

Custom-built for the Antarctic fly-and-sail operations that are Antarctica21’s specialty, the Magellan Discoverer will offer travelers a unique opportunity to fly directly to the White Continent. This approach allows guests to bypass the challenging Drake Passage, providing a more comfortable and time-efficient journey to one of the world’s most remote and stunning destinations.

The new ship will feature 40 cabins spread across three passenger decks, offering a range of accommodations from 12 suites and two triple deluxe veranda suites to 22 deluxe veranda cabins and six single deluxe veranda cabins. Notably, the vessel will include two family suites capable of hosting up to four guests each, ensuring that every cabin provides a private balcony and a cozy sitting area for guests to enjoy their journey in comfort.

Amenities aboard the Magellan Discoverer are set to include an observation lounge, a sauna, a gym, meeting rooms, a large dining area, and a wraparound walking deck, among others. These features are designed to enhance the onboard experience, allowing guests to relax and engage with the breathtaking Antarctic environment fully.

In line with Antarctica21’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the Magellan Discoverer will adhere to Tier III emissions standards. The ship will be equipped with hybrid diesel-electric propulsion and heat recovery systems, minimizing its environmental impact. Additionally, the vessel will support Antarctic research efforts through an onboard wet lab, furthering the understanding and conservation of this pristine region.
