Anticipated Attractions on Sun Princess Cancelled Before Opening

Princess Cruises recently faced a significant setback with its new Sphere class flagship, the Sun Princess, as it announced the permanent closure of several awaited attractions. Originally set to enhance the cruising experience, the Rollglider ride, along with The Net ropes course and Coastal Climb climbing feature, will not be available to guests, despite being central to the ship’s Park19 zone—a dynamic family fun area spanning three decks.

Launched in February after a delay, the Sun Princess set sail on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, showcasing Park19, a novel addition aimed at family entertainment, which includes activities across decks 19 to 21. Despite this innovative move, the ship’s debut was overshadowed by incomplete attractions and ongoing construction.

In a statement provided to The Points Guy, Princess Cruises revealed the cancellation stemmed from its inability to accept delivery of these features due to the installations not meeting the stringent quality expected under the shipbuilding contracts. The company emphasized, “We regret to inform that the Rollglider, Coastal Climb, and ropes course within Park19 will not be operational aboard the Sun Princess, and we are exploring alternative recreational opportunities to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all our guests.”

While these three attractions will not see the light of day, Princess Cruises confirmed that other elements within Park19, such as the Splash Zone, The Lookout, Infinite Horizon, Hammock Area, Recreational Court, and Jogging Track, are operational and will continue to entertain families.

The Rollglider ride, named Sea Breeze, was particularly highlighted for offering a unique hang-gliding experience over the ocean at speeds up to 11 mph. Similarly, The Net was designed to challenge guests with swinging bridges and balance beams high above the sea.

This development marks a pivotal shift for Princess Cruises as it strives to attract a younger demographic and first-time cruisers with its new Sphere class vessels, setting a precedent for the brand’s focus on more inclusive and adventurous upper deck attractions.
