Arajet Expands US Network with Direct New York EWR Route
Arajet, the flag carrier of the Dominican Republic, has announced a major expansion of its US network with the launch of direct flights from Santo Domingo to New York. Starting June 16, 2025, the airline will operate nonstop flights between Santo Domingo-Las Américas Airport (SDQ) and Newark-Liberty International Airport (EWR) using its fleet of Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. This new route is set to become a vital connection between the Dominican Republic and the New York metropolitan area, a region that hosts the largest Dominican diaspora outside the country.
The new service, announced at a special event on March 10, 2025, took place at the Gregorio Luperón school in Washington Heights, New Jersey, a community with a significant Dominican presence. Key figures at the event included New York Congressman Adriano Espaillat, of Dominican origin, along with Dominican consuls from New York and New Jersey, Jesús Vázquez and José Santana. Their participation underlines the importance of this new route for both tourism and family connections between the United States and the Dominican Republic.
Arajet CEO and founder Victor Pacheco emphasized that the new Newark service is a strategic move to enhance the airline’s US presence. He stated that the direct flights will complement the carrier’s existing routes between the Dominican Republic, Miami, and San Juan, Puerto Rico, offering greater convenience for travelers booking vacations, getaways, or visiting friends and family. The 1,557-mile route falls well within the range of the Boeing 737 MAX 8, ensuring that operations will be efficient and reliable. Pacheco reiterated the airline’s commitment to making air travel both accessible and affordable, highlighting the exceptional service and convenience that have become synonymous with the Arajet brand.
In addition to launching the Newark service, Arajet is focused on expanding its connectivity from its Dominican hub. The airline currently serves a wide range of destinations across the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and select North American cities including Toronto, Montreal, and Miami. With two bases at Las Américas Airport in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), Arajet operates a fleet of ten leased Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, each configured in a two-class layout with eight business class seats and 177 economy class seats. This configuration is designed to balance comfort and cost efficiency for both leisure and business travelers.
Earlier in March 2025, Arajet reached an agreement with BOC Aviation to lease an additional five Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. These new aircraft, which will be equipped with advanced CFM LEAP-1B engines, are scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027. This fleet expansion is expected to provide the necessary capacity to support the airline’s ambitious growth plans and broaden its route network further in the United States and beyond.
By launching direct service from Santo Domingo to Newark and expanding its overall fleet, Arajet is poised to capture increasing demand from travelers seeking more direct, efficient connections between the Caribbean and key US markets. With this latest move, the airline reinforces its position as a leading carrier in the region, setting the stage for further international expansion and improved connectivity for its diverse customer base.
