Aranui Cruises Marks 40 Years of Unique Voyages in French Polynesia
Aranui Cruises, renowned for its distinctive blend of cargo and passenger services, is celebrating a significant milestone this year—40 years of sailing the azure waters of French Polynesia. The company’s unique vessel, the Aranui 5, staffed by a dedicated Polynesian crew, offers travelers an unparalleled journey through the enchanting islands, all while fulfilling crucial cargo delivery missions to the remote communities of the Marquesas Islands.
Eric Wong, Aranui’s Executive Vice President for North America, reflects on the company’s journey, emphasizing the dual role Aranui Cruises has played in both serving the Marquesas Islands and creating unforgettable memories for passengers. “The last 40 years have been an incredible journey of adventure, community service, and cultural exploration,” Wong remarks, highlighting the profound impact Aranui Cruises has had on connecting the world to the Marquesas Islands’ rich heritage and stunning landscapes.
To commemorate its 40th anniversary, Aranui Cruises has planned a special cruise from November 16-27, featuring a celebratory “Polynesian Night” on Nuku Hiva. This event will showcase a Marquesan cultural show, fireworks, traditional cuisine, and a ceremony with local dignitaries. Moreover, guests on this landmark sailing will have the opportunity to win a complimentary cruise for two, adding an exciting dimension to the celebration.
Aranui Cruises’ journey began with the vision of the Wong family, who founded the parent company, Compagnie Polynesienne de Transport Maritime (CPTM), in 1954. The innovative idea to convert a cargo vessel into a hybrid ship catering to both cargo and passengers materialized in 1984 with the launch of Aranui 1. This venture not only introduced a novel concept to the maritime world but also opened the Marquesas Islands to tourism, a region previously untouched by global travelers.
Eric Wong proudly states, “We brought tourism to the Marquesas, enabling travelers to immerse themselves in the islands’ captivating culture, history, and beauty.” This pioneering spirit has positioned Aranui Cruises as a bridge between the world and the Marquesas, enriching countless lives through its unique voyages.
Looking forward, Aranui Cruises is committed to continuing its legacy of connecting remote Polynesian communities with the global community, ensuring that the next 40 years are as fulfilling and impactful as the last. “40 years is just the beginning,” Wong asserts, promising that Aranui Cruises will remain a steadfast presence in the South Pacific, celebrating the region’s cultural wealth and natural beauty for many more years to come.
