Ascend Airways Launches Operations with First Boeing 737-800 Acquisition
Ascend Airways, previously known as Synergy Aviation, has embarked on a new phase in its operational strategy by taking delivery of its first Boeing 737-800, marking a significant transition from business charter services to narrowbody ACMI/charter operations. The aircraft, registered as G-HODL (msn 38175) and previously flown by KlasJet—a sister company under the Avia Solutions Group umbrella—arrived in the UK on January 9 after a 12.2-year tenure with its former operator.
Following its registration, G-HODL underwent maintenance at Glasgow Prestwick for a month before being relocated to Nottingham East Midlands on February 8, showcasing an all-white livery. Ascend Airways initiated domestic training flights with high utilization on February 14, as part of preparations for the aircraft’s official induction into service.
Tony Carder, Ascend Airways’ Commercial Director, highlighted the upcoming crew training flights as a critical step towards the endorsement of the 737 on the airline’s Air Operators Certificate (AOC) and the issuance of a Type A Operating Licence. This development reflects Ascend Airways’ commitment to expanding its operational capabilities and entering the narrowbody ACMI/charter market.
Although the airline has transitioned away from business jets, its historical AOC, which currently certifies it to operate Cessna 525 and Cirrus SF50 types for commercial purposes, is still active but pending an update. Similarly, Synergy Aviation’s Type B Operating Licence, permitting charter flights with aircraft seating up to 19 passengers, is yet to be adjusted to reflect the carrier’s new operational focus.
This strategic shift by Ascend Airways underscores its evolution from a niche business charter provider to a player in the broader ACMI/charter sector, leveraging the flexibility and capacity of the 737-800 to cater to a wider market segment.
