Ascend Airways Malaysia Launches Premium 737-300
Malaysia is set to welcome a premium-cabin-only Boeing 737-300 as Ascend Airways Malaysia prepares to enter the Southeast Asian charter market. The airline is expected to receive its first aircraft in mid-March, marking a significant expansion in the region’s aviation landscape.
Currently operated by KlasJet (KLJ) based in Vilnius, Lithuania, the 27.3-year-old 737-300 will be transferred to Ascend Airways Malaysia. KlasJet, a subsidiary of Avia Solutions Group (ASG), plans to ferry the aircraft to Malaysia and subsequently sell it before arranging a dry lease for Ascend Airways. The aircraft, configured to seat 68 passengers, will cater exclusively to premium clientele, enhancing the charter offerings in Southeast Asia.
A spokesperson from ASG informed ch-aviation that the aircraft will support both KlasJet’s and Ascend Airways Malaysia’s charter operations in the region for at least six months, with the possibility of extending the arrangement. This collaboration underscores ASG’s strategy to optimize fleet utilization and expand its presence in key markets.
Ascend Airways Malaysia operates as the sister company to Ascend Airways (YD) based at London Gatwick. The Malaysian start-up is poised to commence operations with Boeing 737 aircraft, sharing capacity between the UK and Southeast Asia once operations begin. ASG revealed to ch-aviation that Ascend Airways plans to build a fleet of 15-20 aircraft under each Air Operator Certificate (AOC), with approximately half of the fleet rotating between the UK and Southeast Asian operations. This fleet-sharing model aims to maximize efficiency and meet the growing demand for premium charter services across both regions.
In addition to the passenger-configured 737-300, Ascend Airways Malaysia intends to acquire a Boeing 737 freighter from another ASG carrier. This move will diversify the airline’s offerings, allowing it to handle both passenger and cargo charters effectively. The inclusion of a freighter will enable Ascend Airways Malaysia to cater to a broader range of client needs, enhancing its competitive edge in the market.
Avia Solutions Group has been notably active in Southeast Asia, establishing several airlines to strengthen its foothold in the region. In 2022, ASG launched BBN Airlines Indonesia (0B) based in Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta, expanding its network within Indonesia. In 2024, ASG further expanded by developing Thai SmartLynx Airlines in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Avion Express Philippines, alongside Ascend Airways Malaysia. While BBN Airlines Indonesia is already operational, the latter three airlines are still in the development stages, with expectations to commence operations shortly. Additionally, ASG acquired Skytrans (QN) in Cairns, Australia, in 2024, tapping into the off-season market where European ACMI operators are establishing a presence.
The strategic expansion into Southeast Asia aligns with ASG’s broader vision of becoming a leading provider of aviation solutions in the region. By establishing multiple carriers, ASG aims to offer comprehensive services ranging from passenger charters to cargo transportation, catering to diverse market demands. The integration of Ascend Airways Malaysia into this network will enhance ASG’s ability to provide tailored aviation services, leveraging the group’s extensive expertise and resources.
Ascend Airways Malaysia’s entry into the Southeast Asian charter market with a premium 737-300 signifies a commitment to delivering high-quality aviation services. The partnership with KlasJet and the support from ASG’s extensive network positions Ascend Airways Malaysia for successful operations, meeting the evolving needs of clients in the region. As the airline prepares to launch its services, passengers can anticipate enhanced charter options that combine luxury, reliability, and efficiency, solidifying Ascend Airways Malaysia’s presence in the competitive Southeast Asian aviation market.
