Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has been identified as the leading U.S. airport for the number of firearms intercepted at security checkpoints this year, according to recent data released by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). With 222 firearms detected, Atlanta not only tops the list but also represents 89% of all firearms found in Georgia’s airports and accounts for nearly 6.8% of the total firearms intercepted nationwide in 2024.

This year’s figures reflect a slight increase compared to 2023, when TSA agents at Atlanta airport uncovered 214 firearms. This escalation aligns with the increase in passenger traffic at the airport, which has risen by over 1.5 million compared to the previous year.

The TSA report highlighted that nationally, one firearm is detected per every 135,560 passengers screened. In contrast, Georgia exhibits more than double this frequency, with one firearm detected for every 65,828 passengers.

“In 2024 alone, TSA agents have conducted screenings for over 443 million travelers nationwide, uncovering 3,269 firearms, averaging about 19 per day,” the TSA stated. The report emphasizes the continuous efforts of TSA officers in Atlanta who are dedicated to maintaining the safety and security of all travelers.

“Our priority is the safety and security of everyone entering through the gates of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport,” expressed a spokesperson for the airport. “The diligent work of our TSA officers in Atlanta, coupled with the proactive measures taken by the Atlanta Police, play a crucial role in our daily operations to ensure the airport remains a safe environment.”

The TSA also reminds travelers that while firearms can be legally transported on commercial flights, they must adhere to strict regulations. Firearms must be unloaded, securely packed in a locked, hard-sided container, and declared at the airline ticket counter to be transported in checked baggage. The same protocol applies to replica firearms, which must also be placed in checked luggage.

This report underscores the critical role that security measures play at airports, especially at major hubs like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, ensuring that safety protocols keep pace with the increasing volume of air travelers.
