Avelo Airlines Cleared for International Flights to Mexico and the Dominican Republic

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has granted Avelo Airlines authorization to commence scheduled international passenger flights from the United States to various destinations in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. This significant development follows the airline’s request last month to expand its operations beyond domestic routes.

Avelo Airlines, based in Burbank, has been given exemption authority for a period of two years, enabling it to operate routes including:

  • From Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio International to Mexico City (likely at México City Felipe Angeles due to capacity issues at México City International), Toluca, and Acapulco, as well as to destinations in Panama and beyond.
  • From major cities such as New York, Washington, Baltimore International, Los Angeles International, and Houston to Mexico City, Toluca, and other Central American locations.

While the DOT filing did not specify routes to the Dominican Republic, Avelo Airlines indicated that more details about these international services, including potential launch dates, will be disclosed later in the year as plans are finalized.

Avelo Airlines currently operates a fleet of 16 aircraft, comprising seven Boeing 737-700s and nine Boeing 737-800s, according to the ch-aviation fleets module. The airline serves approximately 35 destinations across the United States and Puerto Rico, and also conducts international charter services for Apple Vacations from Lansing, Michigan.

The authorization marks Avelo Airlines’ strategic move to not only expand its service footprint but also to tap into the growing travel demand between the US and key destinations in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. This preliminary regulatory approval is part of Avelo’s broader objective to establish scheduled international services, enhancing its operational scope and service offerings.
