Avelo Airlines Eyes More International Expansion

Avelo Airlines, the U.S. carrier founded in 2021, is taking an opportunistic approach to expanding its international network, according to Commercial Head Trevor Yealy. With two international routes already operational and three more set to launch in early 2025, the airline is positioning itself to explore further global destinations.

Avelo began its international operations in November 2024, introducing 2X-weekly flights from Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Connecticut to Montego Bay, Jamaica (MBJ), and Cancun, Mexico (CUN), using its fleet of Boeing 737NG aircraft. These routes marked a significant milestone for the young carrier.

In February 2025, Avelo will add three new international routes. From BDL, it will launch service to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (PUJ), while from Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) in North Carolina, it will debut routes to both MBJ and PUJ. Each route will operate 2X-weekly, leveraging strong demand and underserved markets.

According to Yealy, data indicates robust latent demand for direct flights from RDU to both Punta Cana and Montego Bay. “People are already traveling from Raleigh to these destinations, but they’re connecting through other airports. Our routes eliminate that inconvenience,” he noted.

While Avelo has no immediate plans for additional international expansion, Yealy hinted that the strategy could shift quickly as market conditions evolve. “We’re constantly reevaluating opportunities and expect to serve more international destinations in the future,” he added.

The response to Avelo’s inaugural international routes from BDL has been promising. Early bookings for peak travel periods are strong, though the airline is still refining schedules for off-peak times. “It’s early days, but we’re encouraged by the initial performance and excited about what lies ahead,” said Yealy.

With a fleet of 20 Boeing 737NGs, Avelo continues to analyze data from its international flights while remaining poised to capitalize on new opportunities in the global market.
