Avelo Airlines Sets Sights on Flights to Mexico and the Dominican Republic
Low-cost Avelo Airlines is poised to expand its horizons with plans to launch scheduled international passenger flights to Mexico and the Dominican Republic. The airline has formally sought authorization from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to commence operations to these popular destinations within the year.
In its recent submissions to the DOT, Avelo Airlines expressed its intent to provide scheduled flights not only between the U.S. and various points in the Dominican Republic but also extensively under the terms of the U.S.-Mexico Air Transport Agreement established in December 2015. Although the filings did not specify the exact cities Avelo aims to serve or the precise timelines for initiating these services, the move marks a significant stride towards the airline’s international expansion.
Avelo’s current fleet, as detailed in the ch-aviation fleets module, includes 16 aircraft, consisting of seven Boeing 737-700s and nine 737-800s, indicating the airline’s readiness to support its ambitious growth plans.
In a statement to ch-aviation, Avelo highlighted that venturing into scheduled international services has always been part of its strategic vision. The recent regulatory filings are initial steps towards potentially establishing routes between the U.S. and selected destinations in the Dominican Republic and Mexico. Avelo also hinted at exploring additional international destinations that do not require U.S. regulatory filings, promising more details later in the year as plans solidify.
Presently, Avelo Airlines engages in international charter operations in partnership with Apple Vacations. These charters include flights from Lansing to Cancún, Montego Bay, and Punta Cana, as well as services connecting Miami International to Punta Cana.
As Avelo Airlines prepares to broaden its service offerings with scheduled international flights, the airline industry and travelers alike await further announcements with keen interest, anticipating the new opportunities Avelo’s expansion will bring to the market.
