Avelo Airlines Speeds Up Burbank Exit

Avelo Airlines has announced it will shut down its Burbank base earlier than planned, moving its West Coast exit from December 2 to October 20. The ultra-low-cost carrier cited weak demand in its final month of operations and airport-related challenges as key reasons for the accelerated timeline.

“Due to lower demand during our final month and issues with airport operations, we decided to end our operations earlier on October 20,” the airline said in a statement. Customers affected by the change have been notified by email with refund and rebooking options.

From Burbank, Avelo currently serves Arcata/Eureka, Eugene, Medford, Pasco, and Redmond. However, management acknowledged that its West Coast operations had not produced “adequate financial results” in a highly competitive environment.

The carrier also denied speculation that its withdrawal was linked to protests in California over its decision to operate deportation flights for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Despite its Burbank pullout, Avelo remains active elsewhere in the U.S. with bases in Concord, NC; Hartford Bradley; Lakeland; New Haven; Orlando International; Raleigh-Durham; Santa Rosa, CA; and Wilmington New Castle. The airline recently secured new investment and placed an order for up to 100 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, signaling long-term growth ambitions.

The early closure of Burbank underscores the tough competition in California’s air travel market and reflects Avelo’s strategic shift toward strengthening operations in markets where demand and profitability are more sustainable.
