Avelo Expands Network with Wilmington Base and More
US low-cost carrier Avelo Airlines has announced the opening of a new base at Wilmington International Airport in North Carolina, marking a significant expansion in its growing network. This latest development brings seven new nonstop routes to the airline’s schedule, which is supported by a fleet of 20 Boeing 737s. The new Wilmington base will be Avelo’s eighth, complementing its existing operations in 55 cities across 23 states, along with services to Puerto Rico and international destinations such as the Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.
The carrier’s Founder and CEO, Andrew Levy, stated that the expansion reflects Avelo’s commitment to inspiring travel while delivering affordable, convenient, and reliable air service to its customers. Levy emphasized that the Wilmington base is a strategic investment in popular markets, further solidifying the airline’s growth as it approaches the fourth anniversary of its inaugural flight. He explained that the new routes will enable the airline to expand its network significantly, making travel easier for passengers who value direct, nonstop connections. From Wilmington International, Avelo plans to serve key domestic destinations, including Boston-Manchester Airport in New Hampshire with a twice-weekly service, Nashville with flights operating three times a week, and Rochester, New York, with a twice-weekly schedule.
In addition to the new Wilmington base, Avelo is enhancing its network with another major announcement. The airline will begin nonstop services from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport to Tweed-New Haven Airport in Connecticut starting May 15, 2025. The new route, scheduled for twice-weekly service on Thursdays and Sundays, will further expand the carrier’s reach, offering more travel options to customers from major hubs. This move highlights Avelo’s focus on connecting underserved markets and leveraging smaller, easier-to-navigate airports to provide a smoother travel experience without the congestion typical of larger airports.
Alongside its scheduled passenger services, Avelo Airlines has also signed an agreement with the US Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration Control and Enforcement Agency to operate deportation flights. Under this arrangement, the airline will base three Boeing 737s at Mesa Gateway Airport in Arizona to perform these charter flights, with the first departures expected as soon as May 12, 2025. Known under the discreet name “ICE Air” to mask their controversial nature, these deportation flights will be operated by dedicated crews who are not scheduled to work on the airline’s mainline passenger services. CEO Andrew Levy explained that having a dedicated charter division insulated from fluctuating fuel prices and macroeconomic risks provides stability, allowing Avelo to focus on growing its core scheduled passenger business.
Since launching its inaugural flight on April 28, 2021, Avelo Airlines has flown over 6.6 million customers on more than 53,000 flights, revolutionizing air travel for underserved communities. With a business model that emphasizes efficiency, lower fares, and convenient travel from smaller airports, Avelo is rapidly expanding its network. The new base at Wilmington International Airport, along with additional route launches and the introduction of specialized charter operations, exemplifies Avelo’s continued commitment to growth and innovation in the competitive US aviation market.
