Avianca Expands Cargo Fleet with Conversion of Retired A330-200s
Avianca, the Colombian carrier, is set to bolster its cargo operations by converting two recently retired A330-200 passenger aircraft into freighters for Avianca Cargo. According to Cargo Facts, the first A330-200, with registration N342AV, has been ferried to Mobile Downtown for conversion by VT Mobile Aerospace Engineering and is scheduled for redelivery in 2024.
The conversion initiative follows Avianca’s decision to retire all four A330-200s by March 2023. While one A330 is already undergoing the conversion process, the identity of the second A330 earmarked for conversion has not been disclosed.
These converted A330-200(P2F) freighters, along with two A330-300(P2F) units contracted with CDB Aviation, are part of Avianca’s commitment to expanding its cargo fleet. The conversion strategy became necessary due to the limited availability of suitable mid-sized new freighters. Avianca Cargo, now a strategic focus for the airline group, aims to enhance its cargo capabilities with the addition of these converted aircraft, complementing its existing fleet of six production A330-200Fs.
