Mexico’s Awesome Cargo has entered into a strategic partnership with WestJet Cargo to operate Boeing 737-800BCF aircraft on US-Mexico routes. The collaboration, set to commence on December 4, 2023, will see WestJet Cargo conducting flights between Los Angeles International and Chicago O’Hare in the United States and México City Felipe Angeles and Guadalajara in Mexico. The operations will serve as a vital feed for Awesome Cargo’s hub at México City Felipe Ángeles, where the carrier has two A330-200s configured for freight.

Luis Ramos, Chief Executive of Awesome Cargo, emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating, “This partnership is a significant milestone for Awesome Cargo. By uniting forces with WestJet Cargo, we expand our reach into North America and contribute to the evolution of air cargo transport in the region.”

WestJet Cargo, operating four 737-800BCF aircraft under its cargo brand, initiated freighter operations in April 2023. While primarily focusing on scheduled and charter flights within Canada, the airline also serves destinations such as Chicago O’Hare and Havana International. The new partnership signifies WestJet Cargo’s strategic entry into the US-Mexico cargo market.

Kirsten de Bruijn, Executive Vice-President of WestJet Cargo, confirmed that the airline will operate under its own code rather than adopting Awesome Cargo’s code. Two dedicated 737-800BCF aircraft will be allocated to support this collaboration.

Awesome Cargo, having obtained its Air Operator’s Certificate in October 2023, is poised for fleet expansion with plans to add two 737-800BCF freighters by the end of the year. The partnership with WestJet Cargo aligns with both carriers’ ambitions for network growth and enhanced air cargo connectivity in the North American region.
