Azerbaijan Airlines announced on Apr. 28 that it has ordered eight Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners to support the growth of its long-haul fleet. The new aircraft will enable the airline to profitably open up new routes from Azerbaijan and increase capacity for inbound tourism.

The order was celebrated by leaders from both companies, including Jahangir Asgarov, president of Azerbaijan Airlines, and Stan Deal, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, at a signing ceremony in Baku. This order follows a commitment by the airline and Boeing to purchase four 787s in July 2022.

According to Asgarov, the purchase of the modern wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliners is a crucial step in modernizing the fleet and improving the level of AZAL air transportation. Since the 787’s introduction in 2011, more than 85 customers worldwide have placed orders for more than 1,600 Dreamliners, making it the fastest-selling twin-aisle airplane in history. The plane’s flexibility and range have enabled airlines to open over 350 new non-stop routes, such as Azerbaijan Airlines’ recent connection between Baku and New Delhi.

Built with lightweight composite materials and advanced engines, the 787 Dreamliner can carry up to 20% more passengers while reducing fuel use and emissions by 25% compared to its predecessors. With a typical two-class configuration, the 787-8’s range can reach up to 13,530 km, allowing Azerbaijan Airlines to expand its network across Europe, Asia, and beyond. The airline currently serves 40 destinations across 25 countries, with a fleet that includes Boeing 757, 767 and 787 jets.
