Azerbaijan Airlines Orders Six New Airbus A320neo Aircraft
Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) has made a significant leap in its fleet expansion by signing an agreement with AerCap, one of the world’s largest aviation leasing companies, to acquire six brand new Airbus A320neo family aircraft. This deal, confirmed on October 2, 2024, includes Azerbaijan Airlines’ first-ever A321neo models, marking an important milestone in the carrier’s modernization efforts.
Under this agreement, AZAL will receive three Airbus A320neo aircraft and three A321neo aircraft. The new aircraft are expected to start arriving in spring 2026 and will continue to be delivered throughout the year. This fleet expansion is part of Azerbaijan Airlines’ strategy to enhance its operational capabilities and improve passenger services.
“The signing of these six leases significantly expands our fleet replacement strategy, particularly with the popular A321neo,” said Samir Rzayev, President of Azerbaijan Airlines. “These aircraft are designed to meet the evolving needs of our passengers, providing maximum comfort and convenience while contributing to the expansion of our airline’s route network. We aim to create better travel opportunities and meet customer expectations by opening new destinations and improving service quality.”
Rzayev further emphasized that partnering with a major company like AerCap underscores AZAL’s credibility in the international aviation market. The new A321neos are set to operate on key routes to Turkey, the Middle East, and India, while the A320neos will primarily serve European and Asian destinations.
Peter Anderson, Chief Commercial Officer of AerCap, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “AerCap is delighted to welcome AZAL as a new customer and support them with their ongoing fleet and network expansion. The A320neo and A321neo are among the most desirable and in-demand aircraft globally, enabling AZAL to serve more customers across additional destinations. These aircraft will also support AZAL’s commitment to modernizing their fleet with the most technologically advanced and fuel-efficient options available.”
This latest acquisition follows Azerbaijan Airlines’ previous order placed in April 2023 for 12 A320neo family aircraft, which includes both A320neo and A321neo variants, with deliveries expected to commence in 2028. Additionally, the airline has a separate order with Boeing for eight 787-8 Dreamliners, set to be delivered starting in 2026.
Azerbaijan Airlines continues to strengthen its position in the aviation industry by investing in modern aircraft that enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency. The addition of the A320neo family will not only expand its route offerings but also align with the global trend towards more sustainable and fuel-efficient flying. As the airline prepares for the arrival of these aircraft, it is poised to enhance its competitive edge in the market while catering to the growing demand for air travel in the region.
In conclusion, the partnership between Azerbaijan Airlines and AerCap marks a pivotal moment for the airline as it embarks on a journey of modernization and expansion, ensuring it meets the expectations of its customers and stays ahead in the evolving aviation landscape.
