Azores Airlines Launches A320neo Operations with Inaugural Flight

Azores Airlines, the Portugal-based carrier, has officially commenced operations with its new A320-200N aircraft, marking a significant upgrade in its fleet. The maiden flight of this modern aircraft, registered as CS-TSK (msn 11664), took off from Ponta Delgada to Lisbon on January 24, signifying the airline’s commitment to enhancing its operational efficiency and passenger experience.

Since its inaugural flight, the A320neo has been dedicatedly serving the route between Lisbon and the Azores, providing a direct link between the Portuguese capital and the archipelago. The integration of this aircraft into the fleet comes after Azores Airlines received it on lease from Air Lease Corporation in November 2023. The operational debut of the A320neo was initially delayed due to necessary certification procedures.

This induction of the A320-200N has also enabled Azores Airlines to return a previously wet-leased A320-200 to White, as indicated by Flightradar24 ADS-B data, recorded on January 22. This transition to the more advanced A320neo model represents a strategic move by the airline to modernize its fleet.

Looking ahead, Azores Airlines has ambitious plans for further fleet expansion. The carrier intends to add a second A320neo to its fleet during the first quarter of 2024. Additionally, in a significant step towards expanding its long-haul capabilities, Azores Airlines is set to welcome its first A321-200NY(XLR) in 2025. The airline already operates two A321-200Ns and three A321-200NX(LR)s, showcasing its preference for the Airbus neo family due to their enhanced efficiency and performance.

The introduction of the two A320neos is part of a broader strategy to replace the airline’s existing in-house fleet of three A320-200s. This fleet upgrade is a clear indication of Azores Airlines’ commitment to providing a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective service.
