Backlash Prompts Removal of Selfie-Deterrent Fence in Hallstatt, the Real-Life Frozen Village
Hallstatt, a picturesque town in the Austrian mountains that is said to have inspired Disney’s Frozen, has faced an influx of tourists seeking the perfect selfie.
In an attempt to manage the crowds and preserve residents’ tranquility, the town erected a fence to discourage visitors from gathering in a popular photo spot and causing disruptions.
However, due to negative reactions on social media, the fence has been taken down. The mayor now plans to install a banner reminding tourists of the town’s residential nature.
Hallstatt, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been grappling with over-tourism and has implemented measures such as daily limits on vehicles entering the town. Similar efforts to deter selfie-taking tourists have been observed in other European destinations like Portofino, Italy.
