Ben Gurion Airport Remains Open Amid Foreign Airlines Flight Cancellations

Ben Gurion Airport, Israel’s primary international gateway, continues to operate despite recent attacks by Hamas militants originating from the Gaza Strip. However, multiple foreign airlines have opted to suspend or cancel flights to and from Tel Aviv, citing security concerns and insurance issues.

On Saturday, October 7, 2023, the airport received an email threat related to an Iran Air flight from Tehran. The flight successfully landed at Ben Gurion, with passengers and crew evacuated and thorough inspections conducted by federal police. Fortunately, no explosives or suspicious items were discovered.

As a precautionary measure, the airport temporarily halted all takeoffs and landings for approximately 90 minutes, impacting around 20 flights. Throughout this time, the airport cooperated closely with authorities and the airline to prioritize the safety and security of all guests and staff.

Subsequently, several foreign airlines decided to suspend their services to Israel due to this incident and ongoing rocket attacks from Gaza, which have resulted in casualties and injuries. Among the carriers that have temporarily suspended or canceled their flights to Tel Aviv are United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa, Air France, Wizz Air, easyJet, and Finnair.

However, Israeli airlines such as El Al, Arkia, and Israir have continued their scheduled operations and introduced additional flights to accommodate passengers seeking to return home or leave the country. These airlines are also offering flexible booking options for travelers who wish to modify or delay their trips without incurring fees.
