Benin Seeks Qatar Airways Support for Amazon Airlines Launch

Benin is exploring a partnership with Qatar Airways to support the launch of a new national carrier named Amazon Airlines, following a recent state visit by President Patrice Talon to Doha. In a joint statement issued on May 19, both nations expressed interest in strengthening aviation ties, including potential cooperation between Qatar Airways and the proposed Beninese airline.

The statement also referenced discussions about establishing direct air service between Benin and Qatar. While no formal agreement has been signed, the initiative signals a renewed effort by Benin to develop a national carrier backed by international expertise.

This is not Benin’s first attempt at establishing a flag carrier. In 2019, the government unveiled plans for Air Bénin, to be based at the newly renovated Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport and the under-construction Glo Djigbé Airport near an emerging industrial zone north of Cotonou. That initiative later shifted focus when, in 2021, the government acquired a stake in the privately-owned Benin Airlines.

Benin Airlines, originally founded as Air Taxi Bénin in 2016, is led by Charles Gagnon, a political ally of President Talon. The airline currently operates a small fleet of two DHC-6-400 Twin Otters. One aircraft, TY-BAC, was recently tracked operating a flight to Lomé, Togo, while the other remains stored in Cotonou.

A strategic partnership with Qatar Airways could accelerate Benin’s plans to establish a national airline capable of supporting economic growth and enhancing regional and international connectivity.
