Beyond Aero Hydrogen Jet Clears Key Certification Milestone

Beyond Aero has reached a major milestone in the development of the world’s first hydrogen-electric business jet, moving the aircraft closer to certification under both European and U.S. aviation standards.
The French startup confirmed that its BYA aircraft has successfully completed a Preliminary Design Review, validating that its hydrogen-electric architecture is certifiable under EASA CS-25 and FAA Part 25 requirements. This step marks a significant breakthrough for one of the aviation industry’s most ambitious zero-emission concepts.
The milestone confirms that the aircraft’s core design and systems meet the regulatory framework required for commercial aircraft certification, allowing Beyond Aero to move into the next phase of detailed engineering and system integration.
The BYA project aims to deliver the first fully certified hydrogen-powered business jet, combining fuel cell technology with electric propulsion. Unlike many experimental concepts, the company has pursued certification standards equivalent to those applied to traditional transport-category aircraft, a strategy that increases complexity but enhances long-term commercial viability.
One of the key design choices is the use of gaseous hydrogen rather than liquid hydrogen. The aircraft features externally mounted hydrogen storage tanks positioned above the wings, enabling natural ventilation and simplifying thermal management. This configuration also supports a targeted range of approximately 800 nautical miles, placing the aircraft well beyond the capabilities of current battery-electric alternatives.
Engineers have addressed multiple technical challenges, including fuel cell efficiency, advanced cooling systems, and integration of hydrogen storage with the airframe. The design also considers operational infrastructure, with the aircraft planned to operate using 700-bar hydrogen systems and compatible 350-bar mobile refueling solutions.
Beyond Aero is working with a network of partners to develop hydrogen infrastructure at airports. The company has already signed more than 20 memorandums of understanding with airport operators and hydrogen suppliers, laying the groundwork for future commercial operations.
The aircraft is designed to carry up to six passengers and offer a premium business jet experience. Planned features include enlarged elliptical windows, advanced noise reduction, and high-speed onboard connectivity, reflecting expectations in the private aviation market.
Founded in 2020, Beyond Aero has secured more than $50 million in funding and expanded its presence with offices in Toulouse and Los Angeles. The company is also leveraging assets acquired from Universal Hydrogen to accelerate development.
While certification and entry into service remain several years away, the successful design review represents a key step toward bringing hydrogen-electric aviation into the business jet segment.
