Big Blue Bag Project Launches to Boost UK Marine Conservation

Share

A new citizen science project, The Big Blue Bag, has launched across the UK to encourage public participation in marine conservation and tackle plastic pollution. Developed by broadcaster and marine conservationist Monty Halls in partnership with the HX Foundation—the charitable arm of expedition cruise operator HX Expeditions—the initiative aims to engage people of all ages in protecting waterways, beaches, and marine ecosystems.

The Big Blue Bag contains four simple conservation protocols that allow users to collect data on marine health, including microplastics, biodiversity, water temperature, and coastal debris. Participants can upload their findings through the new Coreo app, an open-access platform also launched today, enabling anyone to contribute valuable environmental data to support global research.

Each HX Expeditions ship will now carry the Big Blue Bag, allowing guests to participate in scientific efforts across more than 250 destinations from the Arctic to Antarctica. The HX Foundation provided funding to develop the Coreo app and produce the first 50 co-branded Big Blue Bags, supporting grassroots marine protection projects.

The project debuted with a beach clean on Garry Beach in Stornoway, hosted by Clean Coast Outer Hebrides. Volunteers were the first to use the Big Blue Bag, collecting data and supporting local conservation efforts.

Starting May 7, schools, charities, and community groups across the UK can apply for one of the 50 free Big Blue Bags by submitting an application at https://form.jotform.com/251172441288355, helping expand the reach of this impactful initiative.
