Biman Bangladesh Chairman Rejects Airline Breakup Proposal

Biman Bangladesh Airlines Chairman Abdul Muyeed Chowdhury has dismissed calls to split the state-owned carrier, countering a proposal from the Economic Strategy Realignment Taskforce. Speaking at a Dhaka hangar event on February 6, he stated, “There’s no logic behind it. Biman has no problem.”
Earlier this month, taskforce member Wahiduddin Mahmud criticized Biman as “worthless” and “deplorable.” The taskforce suggested dividing the airline into two entities, with one managed by a world-class foreign operator to assess comparative performance.
Chowdhury defended Biman’s operational improvements, citing in-house C-check maintenance as a key achievement. “This couldn’t have happened without teamwork,” he said, noting that the initiative saved millions.
Appointed chairman in August 2024, Chowdhury is a former government adviser. His remarks come amid growing scrutiny of Biman’s financial and operational performance.
Despite criticism, the airline reported a net profit of BDT2.82 billion (USD23 million) on revenues of BDT105.75 billion (USD865 million) for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2024.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines continues expanding its capabilities, maintaining full state ownership while enhancing its services.
