Binter Canarias Upgrades Fleet With New ATR72-600 Engines

Binter Canarias is set to modernize its fleet as the airline places a firm order for four ATR72-600 aircraft, each powered by the advanced Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127XT-M engines, with an additional five units on option. This groundbreaking order marks the first time an airline has decided to replace existing ATR72-600s with the same aircraft model outfitted with new-generation engines.
The strategic fleet upgrade is aimed at replacing four of the airline’s older ATR72-600s, which currently operate with the previous-generation PW127M engines. By transitioning to the PW127XT-M engines, Binter Canarias expects to benefit from improved fuel efficiency, enhanced reliability, and reduced maintenance costs, all of which are critical for maintaining competitiveness in the increasingly challenging aviation market.
The commitment was finalized in late December 2024, though the announcement only came to light during the ATR – Avions de Transport Régional annual press conference in mid-February 2025. This delay in disclosure allowed the airline to complete internal evaluations and prepare for a smooth integration of the new engine technology into its operational framework.
Currently, Binter Canarias operates a fleet of twenty-six ATR72-600 aircraft, all of which are powered by the older PW127M engines. These aircraft are divided between two subsidiary technical Air Operator Certificates (AOCs): fourteen operated by Canair and twelve by Naysa. With this new order, the airline aims to gradually upgrade its fleet, enhancing performance while ensuring that service quality remains at the forefront of its customer experience.
The decision to invest in new-generation engines is not just about immediate cost savings—it is also a strategic move to boost long-term operational reliability.
