Boeing CEO Skips Paris Airshow, GE Delays Event After 787 Crash

Boeing and GE Aerospace are scaling back their public appearances following the fatal crash of an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which killed over 240 people shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad en route to London. The crash is now the deadliest aviation disaster in a decade.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg and Boeing Commercial Airplanes President Stephanie Pope have canceled their attendance at the Paris Airshow, the world’s largest aviation trade event, scheduled for June 16–20. Ortberg told employees Thursday evening that the decision was made to focus on supporting the investigation and Boeing’s customers during this critical time.

GE Aerospace, which manufactured the GEnx engines powering the crashed aircraft, has also postponed its investor day that was scheduled for June 17 to coincide with the airshow. The company announced it is assembling a team to travel to India to assist with the investigation and analyze flight data.

“GE Aerospace’s senior leadership is focused on supporting our customers and the investigation,” the company said in a statement, adding that a financial update will be provided later this month.

The crash has cast a somber tone over the Paris Airshow, typically known for major aircraft orders and announcements. Delegates noted that while the event will proceed, the atmosphere will be subdued, with fewer high-profile press events and some order announcements likely delayed out of respect for the victims.

The decisions by Boeing and GE reflect the gravity of the situation and the aviation industry’s broader focus on safety and accountability.
