Boeing Trails Airbus with 348 Aircraft Deliveries in 2024

Boeing reported delivering 348 commercial aircraft in 2024, significantly trailing its rival Airbus, which achieved 766 deliveries, a 4% increase year-over-year. In the fourth quarter, Boeing delivered 57 planes, a sharp decline from 611 total deliveries in 2023.

Airbus continues to dominate the market, leveraging its strong position in the single-aisle aircraft segment and seeing robust demand for widebody jets. Christian Scherer, Airbus’s commercial aircraft CEO, credited key customer decisions and strong order momentum for the company’s success.

Boeing has faced production challenges since a 737 Max 9 incident in January 2024 involving a door plug failure. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed production limits, capping the 737 Max output at 38 aircraft per month. Despite these restrictions, Boeing managed to produce 36 units last quarter and has expressed plans to increase production aggressively by mid-2025, according to The Air Current.

Adding to its troubles, Boeing’s operations were disrupted by a nearly two-month strike by union machinists negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement. Increased FAA scrutiny and enhanced safety inspections have further slowed production.

Shares of Boeing dropped 2% following the release of its annual performance report. The Virginia-based manufacturer aims to regain momentum as it prepares to release detailed fourth-quarter financial results on January 28.

Boeing’s ability to overcome its production and regulatory hurdles will be critical as it strives to close the gap with Airbus in 2025.
